The tomahawk is an axe native to North America and was designed by the Native Americans. Tomahawks were general purpose tools for Native Americans and American Colonists and was used as a hand to hand combat weapon, and a throwing weapon. Originally made with stone heads, later on iron and brass heads were put on them. The shaft is usually less than two feet in length made from hickory, ash, or maple. The heads usually weighed between 9 to 20 ounces with the cutting edge around four inches. Some tomahawks were also integrated into peacepipes, and were a popular trading item in the Old West. Some military forces still use tomahawks today.
